Guardians of Grub – become a Champion of reducing food waste (and boosting profits!).
At a time when businesses are fighting to survive, the decision to reduce waste should be an easy one.
Not only will tackling food waste boost profits and help the planet, but techniques such as product and menu cross utilisation make good sense in terms of resource; time, staff and cashflow. What are the best ways to become a food waste champion? Guardians of Grub is an initiative developed by the sector for the sector, committed to teaching everyone in the industry how to feed people, not bins…
WRAP, Restaurants Taking Action on Waste
“Reducing food waste is one of the simplest and most effective ways for the hospitality and food service sector to save money, boost profits and help mitigate the effects of climate change. We know that in the UK alone 75% of the more than one million tonnes a year which is thrown away from the sector could have been eaten. This waste is costing our industry £3.2 billion a year. It is also costing the earth.” Eleanor Morris, WRAP – Guardians of Grub
Guardians of Grub
Guardians of Grub: Becoming a Champion is WRAP’s one-stop-shop for hospitality and food service professionals seeking the know-how needed to save money by driving down food waste in their business. Businesses of all sizes have access to a wide range of great resources which can help them to target, measure, and act on reducing wasted food.
A brand new course that will run from the beginning of July to the end of September has been developed to arm the Hospitality and Food Service sector with the tools needed to develop skills and take action on reducing wasted food.
Combining learning and skills development with knowledge checks, certificates and evidence based data reporting, this unique online learning programme will equip you and your team with knowledge when it comes to food waste.
“Our teams found that just talking about wasted food influenced change and many of our sites put initiatives in place such as zero-waste dishes, utilising excess stock through menu innovations and donating surplus to the community, all of which were achieved through engagement on the Guardians of Grub Becoming a Champion pilot.” Charlotte Wright, Head of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability, Elior UK
Waste Management Tech
In addition to the course and tools from Guardians of Grub, the use of F&B management software can make the administration of waste management far more time efficient and accurate. Using this technology will allow you to monitor beyond the weight of waste. Track, measure and spot trends by analysing the source as well as the reasons for waste. A good waste tracker will help you to reduce overall spend, improve GP and help you put into practice and see the results of the Guardians of Grub behaviour change course.
