Emissions Cutting Trial set to save hospitality sector £3million
As energy bills continue to rise, the government's new scheme is set to help hospitality businesses to cut their costs and reduce their carbon footprints.
The government has announced the launch of a new trial scheme, set to help pubs, cafes, restaurants and hotels cut CO2 emissions and reduce energy costs.
The scheme, which is part of the Government’s Plan for Change, will provide free carbon assessments for hospitality businesses, helping them measure, track and assess their energy consumption.
600 businesses across the UK will be eligible for the trial, with assessments being carried out by Zero Carbon Services as part of a £350,000 deal with the government. Zero Carbon Services will provide leading Sustainability Advisors to help businesses gain insight into where energy, waste and water are being lost and how to fix it. Through tailored action plans, businesses will be provided with quick, easy and free tools to reduce their carbon footprint, increase profits and empower their teams to lead the way in sustainable practices.
Zero Carbon Services has forecast the scheme should result in a saving of £3 million on energy bills across the industry.
The plan supports the hospitality industry’s target to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2040. As more hospitality businesses measure, assess and reduce their carbon emissions and waste, the industry will move closer towards its goal of tackling climate change.
How the Government’s carbon cutting scheme will benefit your hospitality business:
Build customer confidence.
As consumers become more climate conscious, it has never been more important for businesses to show their commitment to greener practices. Businesses can use marketing tools to discuss their new sustainability plans with customers, using transparency to build trust and boost their reputation.
Through smart solutions such as Kitchen CUT’s partner, Klimato, hospitality businesses can further demonstrate their work to cut emissions by displaying the carbon score for each dish on their menus, encouraging customers to make greener choices.
Save money.
The new scheme is set to bring the cost of energy bills down for over 600 small and medium businesses across the country. With free energy reduction assessments, businesses can identify where waste is being lost and make quick adjustments to cut unnecessary costs.
As costs continue to rise for hospitality businesses, this saved money will make a huge difference for owners to invest in jobs and future growth.
Future-proof operations.
The food system hangs in a delicate balance as climate change continues to impact our weather systems. With more visibility over emissions, hospitality business owners can begin to make smart switches to more sustainable energy resources, more local ingredients and more sustainable practices, to future-proof their businesses.
Software solutions, like Klimato, have a live database of thousands of ingredients and their carbon score, enabling kitchen staff to understand which create more of an environmental impact. Calculate which ingredients produce the most or least waste and create dishes based on their carbon score to promote to eco-conscious diners.
Stay compliant.
As governments continue to crackdown on carbon, water and food waste, it’s essential for businesses to stay compliant with ever-changing legislation. This latest trial will empower business owners to report their carbon emissions more accurately, to help them stay within environmental regulations and avoid hefty fines or court penalties.
Custom technology such as Klimato can support businesses to reach important targets set out by international bodies and stay compliant with mandatory CSRD and Omnibus regulations and documenting requirements through accurate data-driven reports.
The hospitality industry is a key player in the climate change conversation, contributing over 8 million tonnes of carbon emissions each year, with energy costs of over £1.3 billion.
With this Government scheme, hospitality businesses can begin to take ownership of their important role in reducing the industry’s carbon footprint and reap the financial benefits of reduced bills.
